What is Chikungunya?

Chikungunya is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes, primarily in tropical and subtropical regions.

The disease often causes a sudden onset of high fever and severe joint pain, which can become debilitating and persistent. Other common symptoms include headaches, muscle pain, joint swelling, and a rash. Although Chikungunya is rarely fatal, it can lead to chronic joint issues, especially in older adults or those with pre-existing health conditions.

The Chikungunya Vaccine (Ixchiq)

A vaccine, known as Ixchiq, is now available to protect against the Chikungunya virus. It's a live-attenuated, single-dose vaccine approved for people 18 years and older who face an increased risk of exposure to the virus.

Who Should Consider the Vaccine?

The vaccine is recommended for people who are likely to be exposed to the virus, including:

Travellers or individuals residing in areas where Chikungunya is widespread.
Humanitarian aid or disaster relief workers operating in outbreak zones.
Researchers or lab staff who work directly with the Chikungunya virus.
Long-term visitors, such as those visiting friends or relatives in endemic regions.

Who Should Not Receive the Vaccine?

The Chikungunya vaccine is not suitable for everyone. It should not be administered to:

Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals.
People with weakened immune systems.
Those with known allergies to any of the vaccine's components.
Children and adolescents under the age of 18.

How Is the Vaccine Administered?

The vaccine is a single injection, typically given in the upper arm. For optimal protection, it should be administered at least two weeks before travel to allow your body sufficient time to develop an immune response.

Potential Side Effects

Like all vaccines, Ixchiq may cause side effects, which are generally mild and short-lived. Common side effects include:

Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site.
Headaches or muscle aches.
Fever or tiredness.
Serious side effects, such as a severe allergic reaction, are rare. If you have concerns about the vaccine's safety, it's best to consult a healthcare provider or a pharmacist.

Key Benefits of Vaccination

Getting vaccinated can offer significant protection and peace of mind by:

Protecting you from a painful and debilitating illness.
Reducing your risk of developing long-term joint complications.
Providing confidence and security when travelling to high-risk areas.

Additional Protection Measures

Even after vaccination, it is crucial to continue practising mosquito bite prevention. You can protect yourself by:

Using insect repellents that contain DEET or picaridin.
Wearing long sleeves and trousers.
Sleeping under mosquito nets, especially in rural or outdoor settings.
Avoiding areas with standing water, where mosquitoes breed.
